Behind the Booth: Sam Bennett

The Journey Begins

“I started this a long time ago… for as long as I can remember — vinyl, CDJ 800s, streaming, you name it! I started DJing at house parties with my younger brother, then we fell into the club scene, playing before internationals and festivals — and it all just spiralled from there… now here I am!”

From those first backyard sets to running Super good Events, Samuel Bennett’s story is all about hustle, connection, and pure love for music. Whether it’s a rooftop sunset or a packed late-night dance floor, Sam knows how to craft a journey that sticks with people.

The Secret Sauce

“One track that always saves me is ‘So Many Times’ by Gadjo. It’s a classic! Honestly, I’ll play that to any crowd and they will go off — this one’s my secret sauce for sure.”

It’s that perfect mix of nostalgia, groove, and energy that defines Sam’s sound — familiar enough to feel good, unexpected enough to keep you guessing.

Favourite GCBG Moments

“My favourite sets would have to be the 9pm open on a Saturday and the late-night close — especially when it turns into a spontaneous back-to-back with my mate Jordan. At 9 pm, there’s that buzz of excitement wondering who’s walking through the door and what kind of night you can create. Then the close?? Pure madness! Everyone’s locked in, not worrying about a thing except the music.”

Samuel’s played across a lineup of GCBG favourites — Electric, Emerson, Circus, Riviera, and Somewhere Bar — but one stands out.

“Electric is home. There’s just something about that place that hits different. It gives me space to create my own thing, bring my own energy, and every time I’m behind the decks, it feels like I’m still figuring out what that thing really is — and that’s the best part.Actually, I’ve worked it out. It’s the team that just make it happen ⚡️.”

At the Bar

When he’s not spinning, Sam’s usually near the bar.

“Agwabomb with Andreas followed by his still high-five.”

A drink with personality — just like his sets.

The Sound

“My sound depends on the night. It’s got energy, groove, and a bit of chaos. I don’t stick to one genre — I read the room and go where it takes me.”

Local Favourites

“My favourite bar has to be Johnny’s Green Room or HER Bar (music room). You’ll find me at these rooftops on a sunny day sipping a cocktail. I’ve been to a lot of restaurants in Melbourne, but my favourite hangout spot has to be Dessous — it gives New York underground jazz, holding a chilled red wine.”

“Rossi Bar for pasta and pinot, Electric for the music and meeting up with half of Melbourne — then if I’m still awake, I’ll have one drink at Circus.”

Beyond the Decks

“I’ve had the chance to produce my own music, and I love the idea, but right now I’m focused on what I do best —running Super good Events with my best mates and playing sets at the locals. I also keep it grounded with a Monday–Friday blue-collar gig, so I get the best of both worlds — building a career and having fun on the weekends.”

Influences

“Moodymann’s been a big one for me. The groove, the grit, the chaos — it’s all there. He plays what he wants and makes it work. He’s unpredictable, soulful, and always in control of the room.”
